Need Some Inspiration to Get Out and Play?
Pickleball For Life
The players they come
From miles around
To play pickleball at the park
In Reading, the town
They became very social
with this shared new-found trend
On the court they are battlers
but off they are friends
They dink and they slam
and they lob to the sun
I will say when that happens
it’s sometimes not fun
New sneakers, new paddles
for all to admire
Where’d you get ‘em, what’d you pay
the others inquire
We laugh, we get angry
we cuss and we grumble
Some players will boast
while others stay humble
The points to be scored
with a slam, dink or dribble
Line calls sometimes cause
competition to quibble
The excuses creative
at times they are funny
My paddle is new,
there’s a leaf, it’s too sunny
You think wow, that was fast,
please no hits to the face
As you think to yourself
I must slow down this pace
Thankful we found this
The game and new mates
but, To play lower levels
Most everyone hates
and the cold of the winter
or summers like hell
At the end of the day
we’re just glad no one fell.
Again, happy we found
this game and new pals
A great pastime it is
for both guys and gals
The alarm clock goes off
it’s time to book courts
Do they have to do this
In all other sports?
We don’t love it
But do it
Because where else
can you go
Where age doesn’t matter
And you’re not
Going pro
You play to your best
And hope to stay strong
The game’s stupid some say
But We say they’re wrong.

Pickleball News from Reading
Select Board agrees Symond's Way the Right Place for new senior center, Bob Holmes (Nov 2024)
"...In two unanimous votes just minutes apart, the Reading Select Board voted to approve Symonds Way as the site for the town’s new senior/community center and then approved Symonds Way as the site of eight pickleball courts... I’m really thrilled that the board has voted for this,” said Coltman. “[Assistant Town Manager] Jayne Wellman is really moving this project in an extremely aggressive time frame that we’re trying to accomplish and I think Jayne understands that and is trying to make the process work..."
"Last month the board approved $87,348.34 in leftover ARPA funds for the purpose of designing pickleball courts at Symonds Way. But the board approved the money in October, not the site. Tuesday night it all came together. Designer BH+A will work on a design for the courts that will ultimately lead to an overall construction cost. The plan is to present that cost to Town Meeting."

"...Wellman also suggested that $80,000 in unused or encumbered American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds could be used for design work for the project... [Pickleball courts] meet the spirit of what these ARPA funds were intended for,” Wellman suggested. “It is a responsible and ethical use of the funds.”
Water woes, ARPA funds, pickleball and more explored at Select Board Meeting, Bob Holmes (Oct 2024)
"...The idea is to use $80,000 to begin designing pickleball courts at Symonds Way. The most recent senior/community center design allows for six courts at Symonds Way. The new plan is to have eight courts. It meets the spirit of what the ARPA funds were originally intended for,” said Assistant Town Manager Jayne Wellman, who added town staff is united behind this request..."

SWEC considers pickleball, dog park proposals for land by Burbank Ice Arena, Bob Holmes (Oct 2023)
"The Reading Pickleball Players Association (RPPA) was back before SWEC Tuesday night, pleading their case once again for eight temporary courts behind the Burbank Ice Area... 'We started with Rec, and Rec said go in front of SWEC,' said RPPA member Mary Ann Devlin. “So we went in front of SWEC and SWEC said go in front of the Select Board. So we went in front of the Select Board and Select Board said go in front of FinCom. So we went in front of FinCom and in between members of the Select Board took us aside and said you should probably consider a citizens’ petition. It’s your best bet. That’s what we were told.
“We want pickleball more than anything in this town and so we followed what we thought was the right path because we relied on town leaders to tell us how to get this done. Then we were told by FinCom your plan changed so you better go back in front of SWEC and here we are today.”
If you hear frustration in her words you’re right. It was a sentiment shared by other RPPA members in the room."
